RIVERSIDE --- Wilson Ashford threw a shutout and Steven Moon had three RBIs, including a big two-run homer, to lead second-seed Fresno Pacific to a 4-0 win over top-seed California Baptist University in the semifinals of the NCCAA West Region Semifinals Friday afternoon.

The top-seed Lancers drop to 34-18 overall and into the loser’s bracket against Arizona Christian today at 3 p.m.

The Sunbirds improve to 32-20 and move into tomorrow’s championship round.

Ashford (8-2) scattered six singles, only allowed two runners to reach second and none to reach third, keeping the PacWest’s top offense silent all day. He walked one batter and struck out four.

Meanwhile, after a two-out walk to Kaohu Gaspar in the second, Moon lifted what seemed to a fly ball to left, but it carried all the way over the wall, giving the Sunbirds an early 2-0 lead. He then delivered an RBI single in the fourth to make it 3-0.

The Lancers had two big chances, getting runners on first and second in the fourth and fifth, but Ashford struck out Matt Daugherty swinging to end the fourth and then got Luke Esquerra to fly out to deep left to end the fifth. Ashford retired seven of the final eight batters in the game.

David Herd started and went 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and all four runs (three earned). He struck out two to fall to 7-4 on the season.

The Sunbirds got a big insurance run in the sixth when Josh Ferrell walked the bases loaded with two outs and then hit Steven Lozier to bring in Kyle Coppom to give the Sunbirds a 4-0 lead.

Blair Moore finished two for three, singling in the fourth and sixth.
