RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University Head Coach Branden Higa announced the signing of four incoming recruits to the program’s 2013 class.
The class includes a pair of hitters on the outside, one middle blocker and a defensive specialist/libero. All four recruits are incoming freshman.
Jessica Harris – Harris, a 6-0 middle blocker, comes to the Lancers from Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, Calif. Harris was an All-CIF first team selection as a senior and earned team offensive and defensive player of the year honors during her tenure. As a senior, Harris recorded 127 kills, 51 total blocks and 25 service aces. Harris played for Epic Volleyball club as well.
“Jessica is a really quick, agile middle who can not only jump, but has great lateral movement,” said Higa. “She is constantly in motion on the court and works hard to be involved in every play as a blocker, attacker, and in transition. Her quickness and non-stop energy is exactly what we were looking for in a middle.”
Jenna Perry – Perry comes to CBU out of Laguna Hills High School and is recruited as an outside and opposite hitter. The 6-1 Perry earned all-league honors as a senior at Laguna Hills, recording 138 kills and 51 digs. Playing for Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club Perry was selected for the Global High Performance Team and Junior National squads.
“Jenna is a really versatile player,” said Higa. “She has experience playing outside hitter, middle blocker and opposite, and handles herself equally well in all of those spots. Volleyball is a sport that requires a lot of improvisation. Jenna’s experience playing multiple positions is a huge asset and it is something that we can really build on throughout her career here.”
Katie Rotondo – A 5-9 libero/defensive specialist from Redondo Union High School, Rotondo was an all-area, All-CIF player during her prep career. Playing for Sports Shack Volleyball Club, Rotondo was an Southern California Volleyball Report All-Southern California second team honoree and was club captain for eight years. She also received Special Mention as a Prep Volleyball 2012 All-American. Rotondo had 440 digs (4.8 per set) and 43 aces for a 38-5 Redondo Union team her senior year.
“Katie is a proven winner with a tremendous volleyball resume,” said Higa. “She is incredibly skilled, super competitive and has a great presence and demeanor on the court. Katie’s ability to control the ball in serve/receive and as a defender is really going to open up a ton of options both on offense and defense.”
Lauren Marr – The lone out of state recruit for the Lancers, Marr is a 6-1 outside hitter from Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colo. Marr was one of seven all-state selections in Colorado and was a first team all-conference honoree. Marr recorded the third best single season kill total and top single match kill total in Cherry Creek history during her prep tenure. She also received special mention as a Prep Volleyball 2012 All-American. Marr had 311 kills and a .309 hitting percentage her senior year. She played for Juggernaut Volleyball Club.
“Lauren was one of the top outside hitters in the state of Colorado this past year,” said Higa “She is a dynamic athlete who has shown she can score in a variety of ways. She is a great fit for our offensive system especially with the speed at which we like to run our outside hitters.”
CBU graduated five seniors from last year’s 19-8 squad, Including all-time kills leader Ingrid Carmona. The Lancers also add Jelena Dragovic to the 2013 roster as the junior comes off a redshirt 2012 campaign.
