RIVERSIDE --- Adam Hofacket went the distance and Luke Esquerra had three hits and four RBIs to lead California Baptist University to a 7-2 win over Point Loma Thursday in the second game of the 2013 NCCAA West Region Tournament at Totman Stadium.
The top-seed Lancers improve to 34-17 overall and move into the winner’s bracket to play Fresno Pacific tomorrow at Noon.
The Sea Lions drop to 26-25 and into the loser’s bracket to play Arizona Christian today at 3 p.m. in the tournament’s first elimination game.
Hofacket (4-4) dazzled for seven innings, scattering seven hits, six of them singles. It was the freshman’s second complete-game of the season.
The Sea Lions took a first-inning lead on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Burkhead in the first inning, giving ace Tyler Garkow an early advantage. The Lancers, who were playing the Sea Lions for the fifth time since last Thursday, scored seven consecutive runs to blow the game open.
Nathan Antoun, making his first start since March 29, hit the first of his two sacrifice flies to tie the game at 1-1 in the second. Esquerra then hit the first of his two home runs to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead in the third.
With two outs in the fourth, Travis Sais drew a walk to load the bases before Mark Sanchez singled to right and Esquerra hit a two-run single to give the Lancers a 5-1 lead. Antoun’s second sac fly came in the fifth, and Esquerra hit another one-out solo shot to left, his 10th of the season, in the sixth.
Garkow was tagged for six earned runs in six innings, striking out three to fall to 7-5.
Matt Marnati was 2 for 3, getting his 275th career hit with a single to right in the fourth to become the Lancers’ all-time leader in career hits. Matt Daugherty also had two hits as the Lancers had 10 as a team.
