REDDING, Calif. --- California Baptist University fell 3-2 in extra innings Thursday to Simpson, ending the Lancers’ bid for an automatic berth in the NCCAA National Tournament.
Missed opportunities marked the Lancers’ loss as CBU left seven runners on base and committed four errors.
After pushing the game into a ninth inning by gunning down a runner at home and then turning a double play, CBU couldn’t get anything going at the plate and the Redhawks came back up to bat. This time the Lancers defense couldn’t save them as the leadoff runner reached base on an error and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly to center.
Belinda Renne, who entered in relief in the fourth inning for CBU, had stranded three Simpson runners in the previous two frames before the Redhawks pushed across the winning run in the ninth.
A Kara Wall homer and Nicole Hutchins RBI single would even the game back up in the bottom of the fourth, though.
CBU left the bases loaded in the first after scoring the opening run and then left two on in the fourth after having runners on second and third with just one out.
Vasquez and McHann each went 2 for 4 in the game as the only Lancers with multiple base hits. CBU had nine hits in the game.
Simpson managed 10 hits in the game and were led by Noel Montes who went 3 for 5.
Jessica Avila made the start for the Lancers, throwing 3.2 innings and giving up six hits and one earned run. Renne threw five innings of relief, giving up four hits and one run.
Haley Rodriguez got the win, pitching all nine innings for Simpson.
The Lancers end the season 31-18.
