PHOENIX, Ariz. --- In yesterday’s 5-1 win over No. 15 Grand Canyon, California Baptist University doubled the ’Lopes to death, hitting four of them.

Friday night, GCU returned the favor.

The ’Lopes hit four doubles, all in the bottom of the sixth, to erase a 3-0 deficit and steal a 4-3 victory from the Lancers in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep at Brazell Stadium. The ’Lopes defeated the Lancers 2-0 in the opener.

The sweep drops the Lancers to 27-14 overall, 20-7 PacWest. The ’Lopes are now 32-10, 24-5. The four-game series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m.

CBU led 3-0, putting across runs in the second (solo home run by Zach Esquerra), fourth (Blair Moore doubled and scored on a wild pitch) and sixth (Matt Daugherty RBI single). But the Lancers had the bases loaded and one out in the sixth and failed to score again, and it came back to bite them.

In the bottom of the sixth, the ’Lopes got back-to-back doubles by Brian Kraft and Paul Panaccione to lead off the inning and get on the board. Two pitches later, Michael Pomeroy hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Adam Hofacket, who was cruising through the first five innings, to tie the game at 3-3.

Derek Mendoza’s second double of the game drove in what turned out to be the winning run.

Esquerra launched his PacWest-leading 12th home run of the season leading off the second, driving a 1-2 pitch from GCU ace Coley Bruns to deep left field. It was the first home run that Bruns has allowed in 56 innings this year.

Moore led off the fourth with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by Daugherty, and after a strikeout of Esquerra, he scored on a wild pitch to give the Lancers a 2-0 advantage. CBU added to it in the sixth. Luke Esquerra led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Matt Marnati. Moore was intentionally walked and Daugherty drove in Esquerra with an RBI single to right.

Bruns went 5.1 innings, giving up three earned runs, one-third of his season total coming into the game. Hofacket also went 5.1 innings, giving up all three runs in the sixth. Josh Ferrell (1-1) took the loss, giving up a double to the only batter he faced, Garrett Jeffries.

Moore was 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles. Mark Sanchez was also 2 for 3.

In the opener, the Lancers committed a pair of errors and both of them led to runs. In the third, David Herd hit Ryan Moore with one out. He moved to second on a groundout and to third on single to center. Moore then scampered home when Sanchez’s throw back to the mound after a pitch short-hopped Herd and squirted by him.

Then, in the sixth, Kraft led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice attempt by Panaccione. Herd fielded the bunt and threw wildly to third, allowing pinch-runner Kyle Raidy to score easily. The ’Lopes eventually loaded the bases with one out with a single and an intentional walk, but Herd struck out Mendoza and Nick Chapman to end the threat.

The Lancers put just one runner at third base against Andrew Naderer when Moore led off the sixth with a double to left. He moved to third on a wild pitch, but was thrown out trying to score on a grounder to short by Daugherty.

CBU had just four hits, one each from Ryan Cathers, Moore, Zach Esquerra and Andy Crowley. Naderer (7-2) struck out five and walked three in the complete-game shutout.

Herd (6-3) allowed the two runs and just five hits, striking out seven.
