The Lancers and Sea Warriors entered play tied for second in the conference standings at 9-3, but it was CBU making the statement about who actually belonged in that spot.
After giving up a comfortable double-digit lead early in the second half, CBU pushed the tempo and went back up by 14 midway through the second period, behind the hot shooting of Simone Holmes and some superb guard play.
"Simone had a great offensive game and really got us going in the first half," said CBU Head Coach Jarrod Olson. "Then in the second half I thought Lesley Vodicska and Myriah Hicks were crucial to our success with their ball handling and free throw shooting."
Holmes poured in a career high 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting to help CBU match its second highest point total of the season in the game. The Lancers also hit 24 of 30 foul shots.
The theme of fast starts continued for the Lancers Monday night as CBU took a 31-13 lead with 7:02 to play in the first half.
The Lancers led by 17 at the break, but out of the half the Sea Warrior offense found its rhythm, cutting it to a nine point Lancer lead on back to back 3-pointers, and in less than five minutes HPU had trimmed 10 points off the lead cutting it to 51-44 in favor of CBU.
In a game of counter-punches, however, CBU had a haymaker ready for the Sea Warriors.
With 12:25 to play it was a five point game. Less than two minutes late CBU led by 14 after getting a three from Vodicska, four straight free throws and a Hicks jumper.
The Lancers clawed all the way back to the 17 point advantage they started the half with asmatched her career high on a corner three with 4:25 to play.
Hicks scored 22 for CBU and Vodicska added 12 as the Lancers put five players in double figures. Vodicska also had four assists and three steals.
Skye Savini scored 21 and had eight rebounds for the Sea Warriors.
"We are really happy to get a win tonight against a good HPU team," said Olson. "We have a good rhythm going right now and we need to keep that going."
The win moves the Lancers to 16-5 overall, 10-3 PacWest and drops HPU to 13-6, 9-4. CBU continues its road trip Thursday facing BYU-Hawaii.
