HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Despite yet another strong performance from Anthony Romero, California Baptist University dropped its sixth PacWest contest of the year Monday night, falling 75-68 to Hawaii Pacific.
Entering the game, CBU won four of its last five, and the Sea Warriors lost four of their last seven. The tide changed in this game, as a strong second half performance propelled HPU past the Lancers.
Romero led the Lancers with his second 20-point performance of the year and four assists, but the Sea Warriors nearly flawless shooting in the second half lessened his impact.
HPU shot 64 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from behind the arc and 71.4 percent from the line on their way to outscoring the Lancers 46-41 in the second half.
Four HPU players reached double-digits, and one got a double-double, helping them earn their seventh PacWest win.
The Sea Warriors outrebounded CBU 36-18 and they shot nearly 50 percent from three-point range. Thirty of their 75 points came from behind the arc, a key to their ability to pull away from the Lancers.
The loss puts the CBU at 1-1 through the first half of its eight-day Hawaiian road trip.
Now 13-8, the Lancers are set to take on BYU-Hawaii (10-10) on Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. (PST).
