RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Following three consecutive wins, California Baptist University jumped out to a commanding 10-3 lead over No. 11 Grand Canyon on Saturday night; but after that things began to slip away, and the 'Lopes walked away with a 27-10 victory.
A 10-0 major decision win by Taylor Hall was the early highlight of what looked to be the makings of an upset win for CBU.
Hall's commanding win came at the hands of the 2012 NCAA DII national champion Kyle McCrite.
"It was a major (decision) over the national champion," Head Coach Lennie Zalesky said. "So that was a big win."
Following Hall's performance, the Lancers lost the momentum and the nationally ranked 'Lopes began to take control of the dual.
Some close CBU losses by decision at 133- and 141-pounds put GCU back on top, where they would stay for the rest of the night.
"This is a tough team," Zalesky said. "We wrestled pretty well tonight, but right at the end we kind of faltered. We needed to wrestle a little better than normal, because they were probably a little better than us."
In addition to the major decision by Hall, CBU picked up two other wins, both by decision. David Dill, in his final home dual for the Lancers, defeated Kyle Haughian 5-3, and Zach Merrill defeated Peter Anguiano, who beat Merrill 5-4 last time they met, by a score of 8-4.
Merrill's win was his team-leading 31st of the season. Hall picked up his 24th and Dill got his 13th.
The loss gives the Lancers a 6-11 record for the year, and the 'Lopes move to 14-6.
After almost a month off, CBU will return to action March 2, when they host the NCWA West Coast Conference Championships.
