BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- In their first meeting since 2009, California Baptist University lost to CSU Bakersfield 26-7.
It was an improvement from their previous matchup, a 42-3 loss, but it was still not the win the Lancers were looking for. This marks CBU's 10th dual meet loss of the season; their record now stands at 5-10.
The dual began poorly as the Lancers dropped the first five matches. In the sixth match, Zach Merrill was able to win a 9-0 major decision over Sammy Cervantes.
This win helped Merrill secure his 25th win of the season, tying him with Bradford Gerl for the most on the team. His victory pulled the Lancers within 13 points, but that is as close as they would get.
Three more losses, at the 125-141-pound weights, three of CBU's strongest wrestlers, left things looking bleak for Paul Miller at 149-pounds.
Miller (8-16) was slated to wrestle Dalton Kelley (17-9). He came up with a strong 7-5 upset victory by decision, but the three points he earned were not enough to close the 19-point gap and catch the Roadrunners.
The Lancers will pack their bags and continue up north to take on San Francisco State in a dual meet on Jan. 26.
CBU wrestlers are 7-7 against opponents from San Francisco State this year.
