GUNNISON, Colo. --- Since beginning the spring semester competition on Jan. 3, California Baptist University wrestling has been busy. The team has competed in eight duals in a nine day span, including three today.
CBU traveled to Western State Colorado University to compete in the 23rd annual Tracey Borah Duals. This is the Lancers first time participating in these duals, but the competition was not new, coming in the Lancers were 2-0 all-time against Colorado State-Pueblo and 1-0 against Western State Colorado.
The Lancers began the day with a 22-19 win over Colorado State-Pueblo, a dual in which CBU held the lead after all but three matches.
CBU took on the dual host Western State Colorado next. They were able to battle to four match wins, but fell short in total points to the Mountaineers who took the 25-20 win. Following the loss, the Lancers dropped to 4-7 on the year while WSCU improved to 4-2.
Even in the loss, Gerl, Merrill and Taylor Hall continued to be bright spots on a struggling CBU team. Gerl won his 19th match of the year, fifth by major decision, Merrill won his 20th of 2012-2013 and Hall notched the 16th win of his freshman campaign. Smith also picked up a major decision win, his fourth of the year.
