SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- No. 15 California Baptist University kicked off the 2013 season with a tough 3-0 loss to defending NCAA Champions and consensus preseason No. 1 UC Irvine, before rebounding for a 3-1 win over No. 10 Loyola-Chicago Friday night.

CBU held leads in each of the three sets against UCI, but couldn't hang on for the victories as the Anteaters swept the Lancers 29-27, 25-22, 25-22. The Lancers split the two opening sets before taking the last two against Loyola, winning 25-18, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20.

"Early in the day we played well, but there wasn't the drive we needed to accomplish anything together," said first year CBU Head Coach Wes Schneider. "After taking that loss I think we got a little chip on our shoulder and started playing together."

Playing in his first match as a Lancer, Guilherme Koepp led the way with 17 kills on 31 attempts in the opener. CBU committed 17 attacking errors and had 16 service errors to just seven and eight for UCI in the match.

The Lancers took a 26-25 lead on an Aaron McCalmont block late in the first set after staving off game point, but a Scott Kevorken kill would even it back up. UCI got the win on an attack error by Koepp.

CBU led 19-18 late in the second and drew even at 17-17 in the third, but were outscored down the stretch in each game.

The Lancers turned things around in the late match, defeating the Top 10-ranked ramblers. CBU led the majority of the match in the victory.

"I thought we looked pretty good from the outset in the second match and really started to work out some of the bugs from the first game," said Schneider. "

Levi Cabral sparked a four point run midway through the opening game with two kills to help the Lancers take control and then helped cap a 5-1 run in the third set to also give the Lancers the lead for good in that game.

Cabral led CBU with a match-high 24 kills, hitting .600 on his 35 attempts.

"At any moment Levi is capable of taking over a match and carrying the team," said Schneider. "It's great to have a guy like that out there that you can rely on to get you out of a tough spot or take a lead and run with it."

As a team the Lancers hit .441 in the contest, slightly up from the .365 the team posted in the opener. CBU had 20 kills and a .552 hitting percentage in the bounce back third game win.

The Lancers open the season 1-1.
