PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Following a successful fall season, including two PacWest conference championships, California Baptist University claimed the lead in the race for the 2012-2013 PacWest Commissioner's Cup.
CBU took the conference title in men's cross country and women's soccer and finished no worse than third in the other three sports: women's cross country and volleyball and men's soccer.
The Lancers fall teams accumulated 67 total points, an average of 13.4 points per sport, seven more total points than second place Grand Canyon. CBU won the Commissioner's Cup last season, the first time they were eligible to win.
This year, the PacWest added four new schools (Azusa Pacific, Fresno Pacific, Holy Names and Point Loma), and four new sports (men's tennis, women's golf and men's and women's track & field).
The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the school that has the highest average point total in sports that they compete in. Due to this system, the addition of three sports that CBU does not compete in should not harm the Lancers chance to repeat as Commissioner's Cup champions.
They currently hold a 1.4 point per sport lead over Grand Canyon. The winter season is underway, and the Lancers are currently third in men's basketball and fourth in women's basketball. Rival Grand Canyon is in first and third in those two sports.
