ATHERTON, Calif. --- California Baptist University wrestlers did some damage at the Menlo Invite, taking first place out of eight with 131.5 overall team points.
"It is good to get a win," head coach Lennie Zalesky said. "That is for sure."
The Lancers finished just ahead of tournament host Menlo College (108) and San Francisco State (104).
The victory comes thanks to the outstanding wrestling of five Lancers who placed first and won their weight class. Taylor Hall won at 125, Bradford Gerl won at 141, Kenneth Tribble won at 174, David Dill won at 197 and Zach Merrill won at 285.
Gerl won the title of Outstanding Wrestler for the lightweight division. He went 4-0 on the day with three pins and one major decision.
For Dill, Tribble and Hall, victory was extra sweet as it was their first ever tournament win; it was Hall's second tournament for CBU.
"It is a positive thing to have these guys get their first win," Zalesky said.
Tribble's run to first place was impressive, he had a pin, technical fall, major decision and a decision win on his way to a 4-0 day.
In addition to the five champions, CBU had seven others place in their respective weight classes.
The Lancers will be able to rest and prepare next weekend, as they have no tournaments until they head to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen invite Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
This invite features 10 of the top-20 programs in NCAA DI and will be a tough battle for CBU.
"It will be a tough tournament," Zalesky said. "We will just have to take it one match at a time."
