RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University hosted its first ever cross country meet in Riverside, and the Lancers' men's and women's teams both had strong finishes, placing second in both races.

The Lancer women finished second behind the seventh-ranked team in the West region, UCSD. The Lancers did beat No. 10-ranked Cal State L.A.

Jennifer Mallen led the Lancers and beat the entire field of 61 with a CBU 5k record and course record time of 17:56.

Ashlee Cervantes placed fourth, and Malaysia Alexander placed ninth as CBU had four runners in the top 10.

Naomi Van Setten and Rebecca Asplund were also highlighted by CBU Head Coach Ben Gall as having big races finishing 10th and 12th overall.

"I feel like the ladies are getting closer to where we need to be at the end of the season," said Gall. "If we can stick together and gain confidence in our pack running through the middle of the race, we will be in a good position to defend our conference championship later this season."

UCSD won the race with a total of 35 points and CBU finished just one back at 36. Cal State San Bernardino was third with 80 points.

The men's team also finished second behind the West Region's eighth-ranked UCSD. Despite not winning, the men showed a lot of improvement this week, according to Gall.

Mark Langworthy led the way for CBU and was second overall out of 28 runners. Langworthy ran a 25:20. Talal Khan and Trevor Henson also placed well, finishing ninth and 12th respectively.

Freshman Bryan Curtis stepped up today as well, making the Lancers' top five at 16th. Chris Cline finished 14th and Josh Massey finished 17th.

"The men's team is improving, but we have a lot of work to do if we want to be the best we can," said Gall. "As the season goes on we will get stronger and more confident as we head into the championship races."

UCSD finished with 20 points, taking spots 3-7. CBU totalled 41 points.

CBU runs at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 29 in Palo Alto, Calif.
