IRVINE, Calif. --- Today was the start of a highly anticipated season for California Baptist University. The UC Irvine Invitational hosted many meets for both the women's and men's teams this morning.

The CBU women finished eighth today out of 14 teams, defeating NCAA Division II schools Grand Canyon, UC San Diego, and CS San Bernardino. Jennifer Mallen, who finished 15th overall, had a successful day and helped lead her team to a solid finish. Her time of 18:07 is just three seconds off the CBU 5k cross country record.

Newcomers Natalie Ball and Raizah Singh proved to be a great addition to the team by finishing in the Lancers' top seven.

"I felt like our team did well packing up and working together today," Said CBU Head Coach Ben Gall. "I was pleased with their teamwork and how they communicated out there on the course."

The Lancers did finish behind PacWest newcomer Azusa Pacific in the race. Had CBU's No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 runners finished 30 seconds faster in the pack, the Lancers would have defeated the Cougars by five points.

"That means we have some work to do if we want to defend our PacWest title at the end of the season," said Gall. "That has to be our focus as we move forward, getting this pack to continue to stay together and move further up in the race."

The Men's team finished seventh out of 19 teams, defeating fellow PacWest schools Azusa Pacific and Grand Canyon.

Mark Langworthy led the men today by finishing in 23rd place, opening up a very promising senior season. Two freshmen, Lucas Graham and Garrett Williams also had good days, with both finishing in the team's top seven for impressive collegiate debuts.

"Despite some minor injuries, the men's team showed that they have a lot of depth and determination in them," said Gall. "We feel confident they will be ready to defend their PacWest title in October. The guys realize this, and they're excited to continue working towards the goals they have set for themselves."

CBU runs in the Lancer Invitational on Sept. 22 in Riverside next time out.
