The Lancers downed the Hawks 3-0 in the opening game of the Humboldt State Volleyball Tournament, going 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 in the win.
The Lancers were led by Preseason PacWest Player of the Year Ingrid Carmona, who ripped 13 kills at a rate of 4.33 per set. Teammate Kim McCalmont also kept pace with Carmona on the day, tallying 12 kills on 25 attempts.
HNU held slight leads early in both of the opening two sets, but four and seven point runs respectively gave the Lancers the lead for good in each game.
McCalmont scored two of the four points in the first-set run that put the Lancers up 7-4 and then added two more in the second set rally, sparking the run with a kill off the set from Taylor Parker.
CBU hit .292 and .281 in the first two sets.
The Lancers production dipped in the third game, posting 10 kills and 10 errors causing CBU to finish with a .176 hitting percentage.
The CBU defense held HNU to just 22 total kills and an .044 hitting percentage in the match.
Katie Lopez led the Hawks with eight kills.
Parker got the start for the Lancers at setter and ran the CBU offense to the tune of 31 assists on the day. The junior also served one ace and had five digs. Haley Musulman led all players with 12 digs.
The Lancers have a pair of matches scheduled for tomorrow at the early season tournament, facing host Humboldt State at 1 p.m. and then Chico State at 5 p.m.
The Lancers have not dropped a season opener since 2005 as first year head coach Branden Higa opens his CBU career with a victory.
