RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University baseball has announced a deep 2012 recruiting class.
There are 15 new recruits that enter the CBU program with varying levels of experience and recognition.
Among the new players there is a MaxPreps All-State selection, a Riverside County Player of the Year, two league MVPs, two county MVPs and one CIF champion.
The class includes 12 freshmen and three transfers. The new recruits are set to bolster Head Coach Gary Adcock's defending Pacific West Conference Champion and National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship team.
The 2011 Lancers finished 43-13 overall and defeated Oklahoma-Wesleyan to win the NCCAA national championship. CBU lost seven seniors, all of whom made a significant impact of last year's success.
Frankie Alvarez - 2B/OF - Redlands East Valley HS
- Two-time all-league first team
- Was team captain as a junior and senior
- Hit .341 with two homeruns in his senior season
- He led the team in hits, doubles, RBI and assists in 2012
- Won a league title in his senior year
Antonio Chavarria - 2B/RHP - Indio HS
- Named to the All-Desert Valley league first team all four years
- Hit .426 with three homeruns, 23 RBI, 29 walks and a .604 OBP in 2012
- Was in the top five players in the Desert Valley League in batting average, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and OBP
- Picked up 32 strikeouts and a 3.27 ERA in 30 innings pitched
Michael Collins - RHP - Damien HS
- Played three varsity seasons
- Threw nine innings out of the bullpen as a senior
- His team made a CIF quarterfinal appearance in his senior season
Jonathan Davis - C/RHP - Woodcrest Christian HS
- Named Riverside County Player of the Year in 2012
- Named to MaxPreps All-State team in 2012
- Named 2012 All-Inland MVP by HSGameTime.com
- Hit .608 with six homeruns and 10 doubles in 2012
- Won the 2012 CIF section championship
- Holds numerous records at Woodcrest Christian, including career batting average (.459), single-season hits (52) and single-season batting average (.608)
Michael Davis - RHP - Woodcrest Christian HS (Riverside City College)
- Named All-CIF as a 2011 senior
- Three-time all-league
- Was Woodcrest Christian's team MVP and was league MVP as a senior
- Had 16 innings pitched in 10 appearances for RCC in 2012
Matt DeLeon - C - Cypress HS (Long Beach City College)
- Called a perfect game in his final season at LBCC
- Was the starting catcher for LBCC in 2012
Josh Ferrell - LHP - Great Oak HS (College of the Desert)
- Led his team with a 3.17 ERA as a sophomore at College of the Desert
- Earned a varsity letter at Great Oak HS
Jose Gamez - RHP - La Sierra HS
- Named All-Riverside county second team in 2012
- Three-time all-league
- Was La Sierra's team MVP as a senior
- Had a 0.57 ERA as a senior, best in the Inland Empire and top-20 in CIF Southern Section
- Had a 6-1 record with 90 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched as a senior
Kyle Gilbert - INF - Norco HS
- Two-time all-league selection
- Was a Riverside County All-Star in 2012
- Earned a North/South All-Star nomination as a junior
- Hit .303 and scored 18 runs as a senior
- Named Norco HS Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012
Adam Hofacket - RHP - Santiago HS
- Had 35 innings pitched, 30 strikeouts and a 1.06 ERA as a senior
- Named to the All-Academic team three years
Connor Jones - 1B/LHP - Norco HS
- Hit .371 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI as a senior
- Team captain as a junior and senior
- Was named all-league twice, first team in 2011 and second team in 2012
- Was named All-Academic as a junior and senior
Alec Morabito - OF/LHP - Yucaipa HS
- Two-time all-league first team
- Hit .321 with two home runs as a senior
- Lead team to a league championship and CIF berth as a senior
- Picked up 24 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched in 2012
Kavan Pardo - RHP - Redlands HS
- All-Inland Empire honorable mention in 2012
- All-league first team as a junior
- Had a 1.67 ERA in 63 innings pitched as a senior
Mark Sanchez - C - Santiago HS
- Named all-league twice, first team in 2012, second team in 2011
- Was Santiago's team MVP as a senior
- Led the team hitting .351 with five home runs and nine doubles
Taylor Wetzel - INF/OF - Granite Hills HS
- Was named league MVP as a junior and senior
- Named All-CIF first team in his junior season
- Three-time all-area first team
- Named the Daily Press Athlete of the Year
- Was the Granite Hills Offensive Player of the Year as a senior
- Hit .454 with two home runs, nine doubles and 35 RBI in 2012
- Holds school records for single-season hits, career hits, career runs, career RBI, career plate appearances and career put outs
