CLAREMONT, Calif. --- California Baptist University broke into the win column on Saturday defeating Claremont Mudd-Scripps 3-1 on the road.

The Lancers got goals from Bernadette Witz, Daelyn Paul and Kelly Jenks to more than double their scoring total for the season. CBU scored just once in each of its first two games.

"Today was a much better performance for us," said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Claire. "We moved the ball very well and had an excellent work rate which helped us create a lot of dangerous attacking opportunities."

CBU went up 2-0 in the first half on scores by Witz and Paul, and never looked back.

Witz drove home a shot from the top of the box to the far post for the first goal of the game and later Paul buried a penalty kick after Lindsay Vesling was taken down in the box. Both Witz and Paul have two goals this season.

In the second half Jenks helped put the game away scoring on a header off a free kick taken by Paul. The goal was Jenks' first of the season and first as a Lancer. CBU was up 3-0 at that point, allowing just one goal in the 66th minute the rest of the way.

"This was a positive step in the right direction," said St. Claire. "We had an overall good team performance and that's what we needed as we get ready for conference play next week."

The victory moves the Lancers to 1-1-1 on the year. CBU heads north to take on Fresno Pacific next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
