RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- With UC San Diego coming off of recent wins over DI Loyola Marymount and Cal State Bakersfield, California Baptist University hosted their final meet of the season Saturday, facing, and falling to, the Tritons, the No. 1 nationally ranked swim program in NCAA Division II.
In the women's competition, UCSD outscored the Lancers 190 to 110, with CBU winning three individual events and both diving competitions. For the men, CBU trailed 194.5 to 103.5, also winning three individual events and taking the top spot in one diving event.
In the only CBU sweep of the day, Kyndal Terwilliger, Adriana Quezada and Hazel Castillo dominated the women's 200 yard butterfly. Terwilliger won with a time of 2:09.71, narrowly beating out Quezada who finished at 2:09.73, with Castillo using a tenth of a second advantage, recording a 2:10.02, to take third place.
Mary Hanson rounded two first place finishes for herself in the women's 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle. As the sole CBU podium finisher in the 50, Hanson finished with a time of 24.37 seconds, just four tenths of a second ahead of the Triton runner up. Hanson led the 100 with a time of 53.57, less than a second ahead of Norra Stroh who finished at 54.48 seconds.
Mirroring Hanson, for the men, Chris Toy won both the 100 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly. In the freestyle, Toy finished with a time of 46.63 seconds, and Patrick Cardillo finished fourth at 48.62 seconds. In the butterfly, Toy and Tai Nuntapramote bookended the podium, recording times of 51.98 seconds and 52.32 seconds, respectively.
In the 200 yard butterfly, Derek Wedel and Nuntapramote finished in the top two spots with Wedel finishing with a time of 1:55.43 and Nuntapramote at 1:56.42. The closest UCSD swimmer finished over a full second behind Nuntapramote.
Wedel also tallied three more individual podium worthy times, finishing second in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:59.14), second in the 500 yard freestyle (4:46.08) with Austin Aberle finishing third (4:52.65).
On the five board, Lancers won three of the four events. Jamie Flynn won both the women's 1M and 3M events. In the 1M, Flynn final scores totaled 213.89 points, over 20 points ahead of the runner-up. Chrissy Rynvelf finished fourth with 173.54 points. On the 3M, Flynn tallied 219.97 points, followed by Miranda King in second with 197.62 points. Trevor Graifman won the men's 1M diving with a total score of 279.30, less than 10 points ahead of the UCSD's best diver.
In relays, CBU's top finish came in the women's 200 yard medley relay and the men's 800 yard freestyle relay.. The team of Hanson, Gina Rhue, Castillo and Hannah Braun finished second in the women's 200 medley with a time of 1:49.53. Aberle, Cardillo, Robert Nichols and Nuntapramote finished second in the men's 800 freestyle at 7:11.22. Shane Blake, Scott Butler, Tim Kothlow and Wedel finished third at 7:21.76.
CBU Head Coach Rick Rowland and staff also recognized the Lancers' 14 seniors in breaks during the meet.
The Lancers head off to Bakersfield next Saturday, Jan. 28, for their final meet before the PCSC Championships in February.
