Phoenix, Ariz. --- In a rare day of falling behind , both California Baptist University swim teams fell to fellow PacWest member Grand Canyon University on Saturday.
Despite trailing scores of 160-102 for the women and 176-84 for the men, 31 separate Lancers earned points for CBU in 28 total events.
Leading the way, Mary Hanson and Derek Wedel were the only Lancers to place first multiple times.
In the women's 100 yard backstroke, Hanson edged out GCU's swimmer by nearly two seconds with a time of 58.83 seconds. Hanson also won the 100 yard freestyle, recording a 53.25 second performance.
Hanson also finished second in the 50 yard freestyle (24.51).
Wedel finished over five seconds ahead of the runner-up for the victory in the men's 1000 yard freestyle(10:02.8). CBU's Shane Blake (10:11.68) and Mitchell Spezzaferri (10:16.56) also finished third and fourth, respectively. In the 500 yard freestyle, Wedel also won out with a 4:52.20, with Spezzaferri placing third with 4:59.97. Taylor Kile finished fourth.
Hanson was also a member of CBU's second place team in the women's 400 yard medley relay. With her, Gina Rhue, Hazel Castillo and Hannah Braun finished with a time of 4:06.29. Castillo also finished second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.5), followed by Kyndal Terwilliger at third (1:01.64).
Braun was a contributor to CBU's sole podium sweep of the day in the 500 yard freestyle. Braun finished in third (5:18.52) behind winner Adriana Quezada (5:16.61) and Terwilliger (5:17.74). Quezada finished second in the 1650 yard freestyle (17:54.40).
After Wedel, Robert Nichols was the only other Lancer to finish second. Nichols used a 2:01.56 in the 200 yard backstroke for the runner-up spot. Kile finished fourth.
CBU has the remainder of the year off from competitions and will return to the pool on Jan. 14 in Fresno.
