Extending his four-or-more goals streak to four games, Scott Gleason led the Lancers with five goals, including two crucial goals in the first and fourth quarters.
Within the first two minutes of play, CBU and Santa Clara had already tied at one apiece with the first of two goals from Scott Butler, but soon faced the consequences of a 5M penalty and its ensuing goal.
Battling back to 3-3 and then 4-4 tie early in the second quarter, Brent Troutman scored within 25 seconds of Butler's second goal to give CBU its one and only lead of the game.
Cody Wetherbee scored twice in the third quarter, both under the 1:16 mark and including a buzzer beating shot, but Santa Clara still maintained a 10-8 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Gleason scored both of his fourth quarter goals within the first minute and a half to tie the game at 10-10, but Santa Clara answered with their final go-ahead goal at 6:11. CBU could not match despite two 6-on-5 opportunities in the fourth.
Goalkeeper Austen Ramer tallied 10 saves and seven steals.
In the morning game, defense did it all for CBU, who outscored Brown 9-4, holding the Bears scoreless in the second half.
"This was our strongest defensive game of the season versus a top 20 team," Head Coach Rick Rowland said.
Brown received votes in the latest CWPA top 20 polls and defeated No. 15 ranked Santa Clara 10-4 on Friday.
Gleason led the Lancers in goals, for the third straight game, scoring four times for his third game of four or more goals in a row.
For CBU, Peter Hines struck first, scoring two first quarter goals. Brown matched, scoring with 59 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the score at two. Second quarter goals from Gleason, Chris Toy, and Evan Vardayou outscored the Bears 3-2 and gave the Lancers the one goal advantage at halftime at 5-4.
The Lancer defense stuffed Brown's offense for the remainder of the game.
Ramer added 10 saves and four steals to his season totals.
"Ramer came up big in the cage and quarterbacked a great mix of hard nose press defense and a zone defense," Rowland said. "He commanded troops well today."
Gleason scored three more times in the second half and Toy found the back of the net again in the fourth quarter.
Going 2-1 in The Rodeo tournament, CBU now holds a record of 20-6. They next face DI Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. in Westchester.
