RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- In its final year of NAIA competition, California Baptist University finished sixth place in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports-NAIA Directors' Cup.
It is the Lancers' fourth straight top 10 finish, all of them in the top seven. Last year, the Lancers finished seventh. Their best finish ever was fifth (692.5 points) in 2009, and they were also sixth in 2008.
The Lancers, who posted 247 points in the spring, finished with 658 total points. They were third-best GSAC program as Azusa Pacific (820.75) won its seventh straight cup and Fresno Pacific (719.75) finished fourth.
Embry-Riddle (Fla.) was second, and Shorter (Ga.) was third. Lindenwood (Mo.) was fifth. CBU was just 27.25 points behind Lindenwood. There were 201 different programs that scored points.
CBU picked up 100 points with a national championship in women's golf and added another 90 points in softball. Baseball then racked up 57 points with their second straight NAIA National Championship appearance.
The GSAC put four teams in the top 10 as Concordia finished eighth. Biola finished 11th and Point Loma Nazarene was 24th, giving the GSAC six in the top 25.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports-six men's and six women's.
